ONSLOW YOUTH SPACE WINS 2018 ICONIC AWARD FOR INNOVATIVE ARCHITECTURE
Established by the German Design Council, the Iconic Awards are a competition for the whole world of architecture. Awards are given to visionary buildings, innovative products and sustainable communication in all sectors of architecture, the construction and real estate business and the manufacturing industries. The focus is on holistic production and interaction between the trades in the context of architecture.
Awarded to the Onslow Youth Space, which is located in a small, isolated town in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, over 300 km away from the nearest main centre. With few opportunities for youth engagement, Onslow has had longstanding problems with antisocial behaviour and vandalism. The Fish Bowl was developed from a need to actively engage with the increasingly disenfranchised youth of the region.
Key requirements for the space were community engagement, sustainability, innovation and inclusion.
