Celebrating the Success of Fremantle’s Esplanade Youth Plaza

This year’s National Youth Week coincided with the 1 year birthday of the Esplanade Youth Plaza, and Saturday 12th of April was a jam packed day of action for the whole community with demos, clinics, music and heaps of other activities for all ages.

The day also saw Fremantle Mayor Dr Brad Pettitt present Convic with a plaque for their shared Planning Institute of Australia’s (PIA) Award of Excellence – President’s Commendation. We are extremely proud to have worked with the City of Fremantle and the community on this project is one of several awards the space has received since it opened and shows how facilities like these can make a positive social difference for communities.

“The local community has shown great pride and ownership of this facility, which I believe has contributed to its tremendous success and has quickly stamped its youth plaza as one of Freo’s best loved attractions,” Fremantle Mayor Dr Brad Pettitt said.

“During the design and construction phase there was some concern in the community about the location and the potential for anti-social behaviour, but even the staunchest critics now concede that the plaza has been a great addition to the Fremantle city centre.”

“The youth plaza is much more than just Australia’s highest ranked skate park; it’s a meeting place for young people and families and has claimed international praise for its design features. We could not be happier with the result.” Dr Pettitt said.
